Starting A Vegetable Garden
Whether you’re planting for the first time or you’ve been gardening for years, getting your garden off to a good start is important. Vegetables need to be sown in the right location, at the right time, and under the proper conditions.
TEXARKANA, Texas — The Bowie County Master Gardeners, in partnership with Buchanan First Baptist Church, will host a free Backyard Basics Workshop on Saturday, March 11 at the church.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The program will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
The workshop will feature two topics — starting a vegetable garden and raising chickens for eggs.
“Vegetable gardening is a great hobby that combines exercise, fresh air and good nutrition all in one activity,” Dr. Brian L. Triplett, Bowie County Extension agent, said in a news release. “Time invested in a backyard garden can save you money at the grocery store.”
Triplett described raising laying hens as a way to teach children responsibility and to gain insight into food production.
“Once mature and laying, one laying hen per family member will keep the typical family in eggs during most of the year,” he said.
For more information, contact the Bowie County Extension Office at 903-628-6702. People wishing to attend who require special assistance are asked to contact the Extension office early to make appropriate arrangements.
RSVP by calling the Extension office or Buchanan First Baptist Church at 903-794-5766.
The church is at 3635 Buchanan Loop Road.
