Get Growing: Southwest Louisiana Garden Conference & EXPO … – American Press

Home vegetable gardening, fruit production and ornamental and landscape gardening might sound like work to some, but not for those folks who are chomping at the bit to get outside and play in the dirt. For them, the Southwest Louisiana Garden Conference & EXPO is the premiere, not-to-miss event of the season. In its 23rd year, this year’s event is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, March 24- 25, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Burton Coliseum. (Or, get gumbo, early shopping and a preview pass for Thursday. From crazy tawny ants to worm farms, camellias to cucurbits, educational programs will hit on the topics that participants not only want to know more about but need to know about. Area, regional and interstate exhibitors and vendors will be there to assist with gardening, flowers, trees, shrubs, fruits, vegetables, garden accessories, books, educational lectures and general garden needs, according to LSU AgCenter Extension Horticulturist, Robert Turley.

The Federated Garden Clubs of Southwest Louisiana will present “In the Easter Parade,” their 2023 flower show theme.

Participants can bring plants that are looking poorly  to the plant health experts for a diagnosis and prescription, of sorts.

The Southwest Louisiana Master Gardeners will present their Garden EXPO Preview Party with gumbo supper in the Chalkley Room of the Burton Coliseum Thursday, March 23, 6 p.m-8 p.m. for the donation amount of $10. Get gumbo, early show admission and a pass to do early shopping for that donation.

“The Garden EXPO is a wholesome, educational environment and the perfect activity to bring together friends and families,” said Turley.

He’s spearheaded the program since 2000 and anticipates a good crop of participants because of the resurgence of interest in gardening.

“You can attend these sessions that will help you if you’re not experienced, ask the vendors questions and you might even learn something even if you consider yourself a seasoned grower.”
