Gardening guru’s three hacks to remove grass and prepare flower beds for summer

Whether you’ve moved into a new property and want to put your own stamp on the outdoor space or you’re looking to overhaul your garden, you may be unsure of how to tackle the process of removing excess grass to make way for flower beds.

Luckily a gardening guru has taken to TikTok to share his best hacks for easily removing grass and preparing flower bed areas ahead of summer. In the video, the gardening expert explains how most gardens are filled with grassy areas, which can make creating other spaces within your yard a little tricky.

He explains that if you’re looking to transform your garden and “get that site ready” to add “more plants and biodiversity” there are three simple hacks that you can try, all of which are chemical-free.

He said: “I don’t like to use herbicides and that sort of thing, so I would use something like horticultural vinegar – it’s a 45 percent vinegar – or an orange oil spray to kill it off, and then I would let it sit for a few days, put down some contractor paper and then plant directly on top of that with some good rich compost.”

He then goes on to explain that “sometimes even that isn’t the ideal scenario for all spaces” and recommends trying a ‘solarisation method’ with a strip of ‘clear four millimetre painter’s plastic’. In the video, he can be seen weighing the plastic down with bricks and using it to cover the grass in his garden that he wants to remove.

He then adds that, for best results, you want to leave it to sit for “about a month to six to eight weeks” so that it can “really cook the grass”. He explains that clear plastic works faster than black plastic but that you could opt to use black plastic if it’s what you already have.

The gardening expert also adds that after use, the plastic can be rolled up and stored for future use, rather than being thrown away. He then explains that once the grass has been killed off, you can then prepare the space for a flower bed.
