Starting A Vegetable Garden
Vegetables are a great way to boost your diet while developing a connection with the source of your food. Vegetable gardening is a rewarding project that will provide you with fresh vegetables year after year!
The first step is to choose a suitable site. It needs to get enough sunlight to grow vegetables properly, and it should be close to a water supply.

The atypical rainy weather has brought gardeners some new challenges regarding the preparation of garden beds and planting. Don’t hesitate to purchase new plants, however, wait a few days between rain showers for the soil to dry out before planting. A quick soil test helps you to determine when the soil is ready.
Use a trowel to dig up a small amount of soil, then squeeze it in your hand. If it sticks together in a ball, it is too wet. Wait a few days for the garden bed soil to dry, and then try again. When the soil crumbles in your hand and falls through your fingers your bed is ready for planting. And while you are waiting for the right soil conditions, attend one of this month’s UCCE Yolo Master Gardeners’ plant sales, talks, or workshops. The free events provide the University of California with research-based information and assistance to all home gardeners.
